“Do you enjoy your own company?”
The question lingered in the air, catching me off guard as I stood captivated by the breathtaking sunset off the coast of Ibiza near St Antonio. “Do you enjoy your own company?” Three years ago, this query was posed to me during my stay on the island’s serene and less congested side, complemented by the comforts of an excellent all-inclusive hotel.
At that moment, I hadn’t given much thought to whether my penchant for solo travel indicated a fondness for my own company or otherwise. I simply knew I would be alright, understanding that solitude, particularly during my journeys, served as a soothing elixir for the soul. My solo trips, in essence, felt akin to a getaway for couples.
How do you spend your time?
I indulged in fine dining with picturesque views, immersed myself in compelling books, and drew inspiration from the fantastic architecture surrounding me. With ample time and intentional focus, I found myself effortlessly connecting with fellow travelers. Freed from the constraints of work meetings, obligations to organizations, dinner engagements with friends, or the rush to the gym, I could leisurely explore the superficial yet perfect imperfections of my own being.
In the absence of stress, I discovered a sense of tranquility that manifested in leisurely walks, casual people-watching in quaint cafes, and engaging in pleasant small talk. The solitude allowed me moments of self-reflection, granting me the autonomy to make decisions without the input of committees, friends, or other potential dissenters.
What do you get out of it?
For me, embarking on a solo journey is an exploration of humanity’s interconnectedness. It’s a realization that, regardless of our backgrounds or the scale of our lives, we share commonalities that bind us collectively. The freedom of a solo trip extends beyond the physical journey; it is a profound understanding of the similarities that unite us in this vast world, both as individuals and as part of a greater whole. It goes beyond just the time to relax; it is also about reconnecting with humanity and myself. The time spent alone enriches my soul, allows my mind freedom to wander and admire, and focus on myself without a to-do list or the pesky pressures of a time commitment. I highly recommend solo trips, having an encounter with yourself, and getting to know who you are becoming.
